Hands On: Edward Green’s Belgravia loafer

The tassel loafer is a certified classic which we believe is a must-have essential in a modern, versatile wardrobe. And, if you want to have the best, look no further than Edward Green’s Belgravia, which, in our opinion, is the gold standard of all tassel loafers.

Compared to other models of men’s shoes, the tassel loafer is a relatively ‘modern’ design. The story goes in the late 1940s, during the optimistic post-war period, the Hungarian actor Paul Lukas became obsessed with a pair of Oxford shoes that had laces finished with tassels. Keen to explore how this detail could be imagined elsewhere in the footwear department, he commissioned American manufacturer Alden to create a pair of shoes for him, and they artfully applied tassels to a moccasin. Suddenly, the stylish actor had a new favourite shoe – a convenient slip-on with decorative details that elevated the shoe to a new, tasteful level – as did Ivy League students who started wearing them in the 1950s and the rest, they say, is history.

The tassel loafer, in its many guises, has had a place in the modern wardrobe for more than 70 years now. That said, there’s one model that’s always been a firm favourite of ours, Edward Green’s Belgravia. Handcrafted in the shoemaker’s workshop in Northampton, England, using the finest European leathers, Edward Green’s Belgravia is perfectly proportioned and balanced with an almond toe courtesy of the 184 last. The tassels had a charming detail to the vamp, whilst the signature plaiting along the side of the shoe underlines its beauty.

We’re pleased to announce that to sit alongside the existing dark oak antique calf and oyster suede Belgravia loafers, we have two new colourways; espresso suede and snuff suede. Both these models are unlined for increased comfort, particularly useful during the warmer months, and feature thin rubber soles, which also allow them to be worn across the seasons.

It should be no surprise that no one is more excited about the new arrivals than our co-founder Dennis. “To me, the espresso suede makes the Belgravia considerably chicer, and it will complement blues, whites, and grey tones beautifully. Meanwhile, regarding the snuff suede loafer, I think this tone lends it an Indian summer feel.”
